Workflow

How I work

How I use Git depends on the size of the team, but the goal is always the same: small changes, reviewed, and ready to ship. These are the three flows I use most.

When I work alone I keep three kinds of branches. Every feature starts from development and goes back to it; when a development cycle is done, development is merged into main and the version is tagged.

Git flow when working soloThree kinds of branches: main, development and feature branches. Two features branch off development and are merged back into it. When the cycle ends, development is merged into main and tagged v1.0. A later change on development is merged into main as v1.1.maindevelopmentfeature/loginfeature/searchv1.0v1.1
  • main
  • development
  • feature/login
  • feature/search
Solo flow: features branch off development, and development is merged into main with a tag.

Good practices

  • Descriptive branch names with a prefix: feature/login, fix/header-overlap.
  • Small commits with a clear message, so history reads like a story.
  • Merge with --no-ff so every feature stays visible in the history.
  • Semantic version tags (v1.0, v1.1) on main for every release.
  • Delete the feature branch once it is merged.
bash
git switch -c development main
git switch -c feature/login development
git commit -m "feat(login): add form validation"
git switch development
git merge --no-ff feature/login # feature done
git branch -d feature/login
git switch main
git merge --no-ff development # development done
git tag -a v1.0 -m "Release 1.0"
git push origin main development --follow-tags
